Busy Summer at Insurance of the San Juans

Clifford Hansen is having a busy summer. In July, Hansen and his agency, Insurance of the San Juans acquired Telluride Insurance Services from Don and Betty Favier, winding up the couple’s 30-year run in the local insurance business.
As a result of the acquisition, Hansen and his team have spent the summer folding Telluride Insurance Services into Insurance of the San Juans, a full-service, independent insurance agency located at 110 South Pine St., in Suite 101 next door to Telluride Realty.
“We’re really excited that the Faviers decided to sell their successful business to Insurance of the San Juans,” Hansen said of the long-time locals who have retired. “Combining the two businesses will offer clients the best service and pricing, along with more options.”
Hansen remarked that clients of Telluride Insurance Services are unlikely to notice many changes, other than a new name on the letterhead.
“The people who have been with the Faviers will also notice the attention we give them,” he said. “We’re vetting all of their policies and will contact them to see if there is something we can improve, or shop around to find them a better rate — we’ve already done that for several customers.”
He added, “When I started our agency here 10 years ago, the goal was to focus on service and to always put the clients first. We’ll continue doing that. As an independent agency, Insurance of the San Juans provides multiple options from best-in-class carriers. We offer a careful review of clients’ exposures and design programs to meet their needs.
“We not only listen to our clients, but embrace the idea that we are at their service. Above all, our vision is to be the best in the eyes of our customers because we realize they are our greatest asset.”
There are challenges to insuring high in the San Juan Mountains, Hansen acknowledged. Factors ranging from frozen pipes in winter to increased risk of forest fires in summer, as well as higher than normal construction costs and a smaller pool of contractors, can conspire against property and business owners.
Part of meeting those challenges, Hansen explained, “involves selecting the right insurance for individuals and businesses. Insurance of the San Juans’ experienced staff of licensed agents can help ensure that clients receive the best coverage and value.”
Hansen pointed out that the team at Insurance of the San Juans was recently rated the Best Agency to Work With by United Fire Group. “I’m incredibly proud of my team for their hard work and service to our clients.”
With offices in Telluride and Montrose, Insurance of the San Juans offers personal insurance including home, auto, valuables and umbrella, as well as commercial lines for businesses. This includes general liability, workers’ compensation, home and condo association, bonding, and more.
Telluride Insurance Services, Hansen said, had contracts with Progressive and Allstate. Insurance of the San Juans was already working with Progressive and has now added Allstate to their group of insurance carriers.
And while Hansen, who lives in Telluride with his wife, Mary Ellen, and daughters, Easley and Camilla, works busily alongside his staff to welcome the agency’s newest customers, he says he’s also eyeing a little family time come ski season. “I’ve got a 2- and a 4-year-old and the goal is to try to get out on the slopes with them as much as possible.”
